Roses have a long and colourful history. They have been symbols of love, beauty, war and politics. The rose that grows in gardens around the world today is the evolution of rose-like plants that were found in the northern hemisphere between 33 million and 23 million years ago. This is evidenced by fossil specimens that have been found. The magnificent flowers in gardens were deliberately cultivated, possibly as early as 3000 BCE in China. Roses are also highly praised in Latvian folk songs. There is evidence that they grew wild in Latvia as early as the 12th-13th centuries. Rose varieties imported from Western Europe are thought to have been cultivated in the 17th century in Jelgava, in the garden of the Duke of Courland. The first records of roses being sold in Riga date back to the end of the 18th century. Latvian gardeners and breeders have also contributed to rose breeding.

My future plans also include creating my own rose varieties to make this wonderful plant accessible and loved by everyone!
